Historically, the concept of leadership first developed on the battlefields of the ancient world. Above all else, in an era of hand-to-hand combat, leadership on the front line called for courage above all else.

Ever since that day, courage has been essential for anyone in leadership. Aristotle captured the reason why when he said of courage, "It is the first of human qualities, because it is the quality which guarantees the others."

In other words, all other leadership virtues are left vulnerable to compromise in the absence of courage. Leaders who have made an impact on history have all possessed courage, even leaders whom you would probably describe as wicked. Without courage, they would have achieved nothing.

This episode explores why courage is just as essential to leaders in a white-collar environment in an office tower as it is to leaders in life-or-death circumstances on the battlefield.
