We are unlikely to follow a leader enthusiastically if we've lost trust in the leader's character or performance. These same two factors — character and performance — are what shapes a leader's reputation. For leaders, therefore, reputation and trust rise and fall in tandem.

Yet reputations are fragile. Warren Buffett once said that it takes twenty years to build a reputation and only fifteen minutes to wreck it. And because reputations are fragile, trust is always vulnerable.

Leaders must therefore be forever attuned to how their words and actions could potentially harm their reputation and thus the trust which they enjoy. This episode examines the close linkage between reputation and trust. And it explores how character and performance shape both.
