The Two Anchor Points

Wherever we lead, whatever our role, our leadership must remain constantly attached to two vital anchor points.

The first is people. In contrast to management, which focuses heavily on optimizing the use of tools, equipment, and other physical and fiscal resources, leadership is exclusively people-centric. To the degree that leaders become disconnected from their people, they are no longer leading.

Second is the purpose which the leader and the leader's people are pursuing. In general, people are never more committed to a purpose than their leader is. Thus, if leaders want their people to be fully committed to an orchestrating purpose, the leader must be riveted to that purpose constantly.
