This episode continues the theme of the previous one, where we began studying the elements of my definition of leadership. I define it as the art of rallying people around a shared purpose, then motivating them and mobilizing them to achieve it.

The focus in this episode is on the word "art." For a variety of reasons, leadership is more nearly an art than a science. I explain why in the podcast.

Like the work of an artist, the work of a leader is judged on a purely subjective basis. Some people will like it, others will not. This then means that leaders must be prepared to deal routinely with critics whose viewpoints are not fully informed or are simply a product of a personal prejudice.

Leaders must therefore bring a healthy sense of self to their role so as to press forward consistently even in the face of unfair or uninformed criticism.
