Albert Einstein is quoted as saying, "Example is not a way to learn. It's the only way to learn."

He was stating a principle as basic as human nature itself. At every stage of life we master new abilities primarily by imitating what we see in the lives of people who already excel in that capacity.

In this series of podcasts, we've been examinining the downward trend in accountability which has beset American culture. In this episode I zero in on specific countermeasures which leaders can take to deepen the sense of personal accountability in their workers.

The starting point, I argue, is for leaders themselves to become role models of accountability. Otherwise, they will lose their credibility as leaders if they advocate accountability to workers, but fail to exemplify it themselves.

But I go beyond just encouraging a modeling approach. I offer a specific process for leaders to assess themselves in terms of the accountability which they model. Then I offer guidelines on how leadrs can utilize their personal model to greatest effect in bringing about desired change.
