The stubborn and effective resistance which Ukraine has thrown up against Russia has surprised the word — and has even changed the course of modern warfare as a result of Ukrainian innovations on the battlefront.

Vladimir Putin and his war planners obviously never anticipated this determined spirit from the Ukrainians, who had never been known for a strong sense of national patriotism. But the Russian invasion changed all of that.

A latent nationalist spirit had been hovering just below the surface for decades. There had never been a moment, however, which caused that spirit to gel — until Russia invaded.

In this episode I explain how that came about and analyze the implications of this newborn patriotism for the future course of the war.
