For weeks now, Congress has been mired in a debate about further funding for Ukraine in its war with Russia. As I listen to commentators on both sides of that issue, I realize the extent to which otherwise well-informed Amercans are unfamiliar with critical backstories which compound the difficulty of settling this conflict.

With this episode, I begin a multipart series to address some of these backstories. I draw on years of experience on the ground in both Russia and Ukraine, working shoulder to shoulder with people from all walks of life — from street vendors and coal miners to government officials and university faculties.

I managed offices and staffs in both Russia and Ukraine and traveled extensively in the two countries. What I soon learned is that while Russia and Ukraine share much in common, the people differ markedly in outlooks, attitudes, and aspirations. These differences are amplified by emotionally-charged negative attitudes on both sides toward the other.

As national debates continue about whether to extend our support of Ukraine, it's important for Americans to understand the total complexity of this conflict. I'm offering these episodes to contribute to that understanding.
